I only know a few CAKE songs, but I was never really into them and haven't even listened to the songs I do know in years. And I know nothing about the band themselves. What happened with them?

Their drummer was also convicted of child molestation. Unfortunately he was the drummer during many of CAKE's most prominent songs, like Comfort Eagle and Short Skirt/Long Jacket.

Honestly, I'd be more turned away if it were the lead singer. Someone's actual voice is a lot more personal and intimate than background percussion. I don't feel close to a drummer the same way I do a vocalist or guitarist. Your mileage may vary of course- I grew up listening to Cake through high school. There is some hardwired bias. I can still enjoy their music without associating it with molestation, but I certainly don't speak for everyone.
