(A bit late but...)

I think it actually stems from a combination of popular horror tropes and real-life influences. You have classic serial killer cases, cannibalism cases, and also the abuse and murder that frequently occurs within cults and cult communes.

There's also the distrust of rural folk, whether hillbillies or other kinds. I've seen this ascribed to classism but I suspect it has more to do with our tribal instinct. The smaller the community, the more unwelcoming towards outsiders it will naturally seem, and the more dangerous it is for people outside it's circle.

It basically pegs a huge swath of people's natural fears by smashing together as much revulsion as it can.
