really? I don't remember anything that talked about the character's gender identity, except that they were literally tortured to craziness or something and had no idea who they actually were.

It's been a million years since I saw Escaflowne (and even then, I didn't really understand what was going on), but didn't Dilandau start identifying as a female again once he got his memories back or something?

Dilandau and Celena are two separate personalities that are (mostly) unaware of each other. Dilandau has one or two flashbacks to the time Celena spent in the cell, and his fear of being left alone is rooted in the trauma Celena suffered after her capture, but otherwise Dilandau is Dilandau and identifies 100% as male whenever he is shown on screen. For her part Celena seems to be completely oblivious to Dilandau's existence, and is pretty much a child trapped in a now teenage body.

I could've sworn the show ended with Dilandau taking on Celena's appearance and living as what's-his-name's sister? Then again, it was a million years ago and that plot confused the hell out of my 10 year old brain at the time, especially since it was the butchered dub version I watched.

Van nearly destroys Dilandau's Oredies but Allen blocks the killing blow, leading to the final battle between the two. During the fight Dilandau reverts back to Celena, possibly as a result of Jajuka urging him to return to being the innocent child that the Sorcerers had abducted before Jajuka was killed. Celena watches the battle and calls out to her brother when Escaflowne crushes Scheherazade's cockpit. Allen escapes unharmed, and both he and Celena later see Hitomi off when Van sends her back to Earth. Whether or not the Dilandau personality is completely gone or not is never explained.

The butchered dub was indeed butchered! Basically, think of Dilandau and Celena taking up the same place in in the universe, sort of like they're AUs of each other. Celena was kidnapped when she was a child, then Fate itself was altered and Celena ceased to exist, being replaced by Dilandau. The two of them phasing back and forth between each other was due to Hitomi's influence, making Fate change back to the way it was supposed to be while the Zaibach Empire tried to keep it altered. In the end, Fate returns to its original pattern, and Dilandau ceases to exist, leaving only Celena. She was in his clothes because they did both occupy the same body/place in existence, so the clothes just sort of came with, haha.

...Hopefully that made a little sense!

Ohhhhh, all this time I thought it was a split personality thing (I didn't watch the show that closely and missed a lot of episodes, so most of the time I didn't know what was going on eh-heh). Thank you for clearing that up!

How do you know Dilandau 100% IDs as a guy? Anyway, she's actually a girl, no matter what personality she was forced to take on as a result of the torture.
