While I'm actually afraid of heights, that game didn't bug me. Then again, I'm a huge arachnophobe and spiders in video games don't bug me either.

I can see why it'd be nerve-wracking though. If it were IRL I'd probably puke.

I'm jealous! I'm also a huge arachnophobe, and I can't even look at a goddamn picture of one of the 8-legged horrors. It's kind of ridiculous. (An online friend actually successfully convinced me to try playing games on a computer instead of a console purely because of the existence of anti-spider mods.)

I think the difference is being on a screen is a lot different for me. Also, I can blow them up. It's therapeutic. Doesn't stop me from freaking out and going through my entire repertoire of offensive words in 5 seconds when an actual spider lands on me IRL.

It's a wonder I don't burn my house down.

Yeah, fair enough. Most times, reducing things to a 2D image creates enough mental distance that they don't bother me as much. But spiders remain an exception. Agreed on it being therapeutic, though! I'd actually enjoy that part.

Oh yes. I have actually given serious thought to applying flames to the last place I saw a since-disappeared spider. If I could have figured out how, I probably would have burned down a house or three by now. Ugh. As it is, I almost tossed an armful of groceries over the porch railing earlier this week when I walked into a web that must have been stretched across the steps and the little bastard fell right into one of the bags and started crawling around. (Fortunately it fell right on top of a bag-inside-the-bags that had something sturdy inside of it. I ended up not losing anything when I ripped the bag with the spider out of the other bag and started bashing it against the floorboards.)

The side of my house is covered in spiders. Not sure where they come from. I end up slamming a shoe against my house a lot. I also never turn on my porch light because it just attracts bugs which attracts spiders.

I will have you know that after reading your reply I stared at the screen in horrified sympathy for almost a minute before I could start typing again. Both because of the "covered in spiders" part (AUGH!) and because I used to live in a place that was similarly afflicted. Like, the whole town. All the houses looked like they had mange. Fun times. I was still a teenager at the time and fortunately for me, my family was reasonably sympathetic about the phobia and tended to clear the area around the door. Or didn't care to deal with me having screaming hysterics every time I tried to enter the house, whichever.

Yeah, movie or game spiders don't bother me, though I do occasionally shudder if they are like...hyper realistic.

RL? I go into "OSHITFUCKDAMN" mode, freeze, inch away, usually to find a shoe, inch back, the WHAM WHAM WHAM.

Fucking dead.

.....except that time a wolf spider was in the kitchen and I whacked it with a shoe, only to see flakes fly off...those weren't flakes....

My mom's like this with snakes. She and I went to see A Series of Unfortunate Events in theatre together back in the day and she hid under her jacket until that whole part of the movie was over.

Second rule of fantasy CRPGs, there's always giant spiders.
The first rule is that there's never enough inventory space.

The spiders in Thief make the worst noises, especially that screech when you kill them.
