5. Whoa. I absolutely agree. I thought I was alone here, especially with the way she fangirled Haruka.

18/30. Guys, come on. He based his murders on news reports. Please tell me you can see the flaw here? Even if convicted of murder in a real court of law, as a opposed to a court of public opinion, there's no saying that a person is truly guilty or not, as movements like the Innocence Project have shown. Evidence is falsified, police officers lie to get convictions, politics are involved, etc. This is why so many people oppose the death penalty. For Light to justifiy his murders based on "NHK SEZ SO!" is not just flawed, it's imbecilic.

(Not to mention that the justice system as well as the media in Japan is horribly racist, and doubtless Light offed a few gaijin who were taking the heat off of natives. Imagine yourself, after having finally achieved your dream of teaching English in Japan or attending Comiket, slain by the Death Note because NHK decided to play blame the foreigners for all of Japan's problems again.)

dfskjfghdklflktr; thank you. I was going to say the same thing, but now I don't have to.

Serious lulz at people who don't understand the criminal justice system. I have to wonder how many are American, given they predspostion toward approval of the death penalty.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm personally not American, so I haven't been exposed to the rhetoric used to justify the death penalty, and more to that against it. Perhaps a bit of bias on my part, but for those keeping score at home, that's 14 innocent people put to death so far by the state, and counting.

Of course, the counterargument tends to be "14 out of 1000's not bad", but isn't one too many? I'm guessing Light's supporters would say no.

I for one totally agree that one is too many. This reminds me of the correction made to the statistics about women dying from anorexia in the States. Sure, it was 100 instead of 150,000, but how can people go around saying that 100 is too few?

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-02-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
The rhetoric used tends to flow one of two ways: the uneducated pandering to emotion (eg "What if someone raped and murdered your daughter? Wouldn't you want to rip his fucking head off?"), or the more academic, "One of the four purposes of the CJ system is retribution specifically, thus capital punishment fits into the model". Of course, the latter's pretty easily refuted as one of the other four purposes is incarceration, something that serves just fine. Life without parole is less expensive here anyway.

From a CJ standpoint, I'm actually pretty damn conservative. If I knew the death penalty had no chance of ever ever ever being wrongly applied? I would accept it in a heartbeat. But the fact is we cannot know that for sure. In fact, I believe the actual total on US soil is anywhere from 32 to 50 wrongful deaths we know about for a fact.

Perhaps some of these people (including idiot Light supporters) need to turn the hypothetical tables on themselves.

Ahaha, is my bias showing?

One is too many. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

ACE.

YES. I mean, if he was being all Dexter about it, sure, I can see how his cause would be sympathetic, but when he's not even doing his own legwork before LOL ARBITRARY DEFFS? Come on.
