Do you find it very plausible that a big budget DreamWorks animated feature released in 2000 would have at any point in the creative process involved gay protagonists?

Nah.

I think they're just young. I don't think people realize just how much has changed since the late 1990s/2000. I remember The Birdcage being controversial. Now I can watch a funny gay couple on Modern Family being presented as kid-friendly entertainment.

Chill, dude. I'm not op, and I am gay as gay can be. And I'd heard that rumor myself, though I doubted it, several years ago. And I tried to look it up myself.

Just because there's no way back then there would've been any serious consideration for making the characters gay, that doesn't mean the writers weren't thinking it. No idea if it's true or not, but no need for you to flip out and pull the Q-card.
