Yeah, I think most of the appeal of the relationship was because it was probably one of the first developed/dramatic/cinematic romances in a video game for kids in that era (not just a one-off blush or a teasing comment, or a "main male and love interest obviously get together" type lazy story).

The way that Locke and Celes have so much going on outside of the romance, and the cast and story have so much going on outside of the Celes/Locke romance, was also part of the appeal I think.

However, as far as love stories go, so much of it really does fall flat. I never really could get into it.
