Honestly, that entire movie freaked me out.

It really was disturbing! Like Batty's whole thing, jeez.

Okay so I just re-watched the whole thing! Which I'd been meaning to do for a while now and this reminded me.

I found it pretty enjoyable for what it was, but I'm not surprised it freaked me out as a kid. Maybe this was a reflection of the times (I think it came out in 1992?) but the way the forest was portrayed seemed to have an almost constant dark edge to it. I couldn't remember what the scene with the white trees was, but upon re-watching, that's supposed to be the happy good magic scene? Those trees look pretty freaky, and that scene I think bothered me the most as a kid.

Of course everything about the leveler and Hexxus was scary to me as a child, too. Basically the whole movie had kind of a scary edge to five-ish-year-old me.

I forgot how adorable Batty was though. <3 (And yeah, the stuff that happened to him was awful, but as a kid that part went right over my head. I think I assumed he was just a bat who lived in the forest.)
