Re: when recs go bad

*whew* it's not one of my recs

That said, it's fair enough - not everything is for everybody. At the same time, it is one of the reasons why I don't usually make a lot of recommendations - it's just so hard to really get a sense for precisely what someone is looking for. There are so many variables that go into whether or not you like something. I can define my own taste really well, but it's a lot harder to get a sense for others' taste especially in the context of a rec post. I really do find it frustrating.

that's a good policy, I like you anon.

but at the same time, when you don't have a lot of friends whose taste you respect, or friends who aren't watching/reading the same things you are at all, where else do you go for recs? I guess it really is just a crapshoot putting it out there, mining as many recs as you can get, and then weeding through them to find the good stuff on your own.

at least I didn't spend money on it. ;)

Yeah, it's absolutely a real problem. I think the best route generally is to find a few people who have taste that you agree with or find interesting, while also being really really knowledgeable themselves, and using that to find a way into it. And then ideally at some point you build the domain knowledge to evaluate these things and scent them out yourself to some extent. And the connections. Although obviously that works a lot better in some areas (books and movies) than in others (fanfiction).

One thing that I have found is that those people often tend to be creators themselves - trying to find the authors that the authors I like talk about or were influenced by has been really fruitful for me. Or even authors I don't like - I'm not a huge fan of Neil Gaiman (nothing against him, I'm just not that impressed by his work post-Sandman) but the guy has extremely real knowledge of SF&F and his taste is quite close to mine. So that's been pretty good.
