Who, in your opinion, are some badly written main characters?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
They're boring. They're useless to the plot. This isn't the character being bad ("I'm going to blow up this bus full of orphaned nuns!") but the writer being bad.

Bonus point is this character is from an otherwise good cast of characters.

Oooooooh. I don't hate JD but I don't like him and I prefer basically every other character but him, plus I would take enjoyment out of watching him fail at things or the Janitor dicking him over(which happened a lot).

While he's not a bad main character, I found Aang to be the least interesting of the ATLA Gaang. Which isn't at all true for Korra, in my opinion.

+3 for Aang

For LOK I didn't like any of the characters for the majority of season 2 :/

Boring main characters from good casts:

Sabriel. I have a sense that this is an unpopular opinion, but I felt like she just... did things... but didn't have much of a personality to go with it.

The main guy from Legend of the Seeker was so boring I don't even remember his name.

Richard. But who cares about him. The show was really about the others. Like Kahlan and Cara. :D

Hiro on Heroes.

He's okay when he's being serious, but that enthusiasm that so many people love about him? I haaaaated it. I'm doing a rewatch and even though I'm kind of bored by Hiro in Japan, not having to hear "Flying Man!!!!!!!" is like a release for my soul.

Well, the worst main character I can recall is Matthew from The Fifth Ring by Mitchell Graham. That entire series is spectacularly bad, though.

The worst main characters in good casts are usually video game protagonists. They have to be generic so everyone can identify with them, right?

How about the main character lead guy from Scorpion. God I hate him so much. He is literally a stand-in wish fulfillment sue for the guy it's based on, and so every other character's lives and goals and motives revolve around him. Because he's just so that awesome.

Also that show totally is a mess, but that main character is the reason I dropped it way back in it's first season. I hate him.

Also, the main character in Least I Could Do. I hate that comic so much too.

"Way back in its first season."

It's only had one season, so this is hardly as vast a tipping point as you seem to think.

I remember "Scorpion". It sounded like something a card carrying MENSA member would watch to feel better about their membership fees. IQ is a crock of shit.

Scorpion could have been so entertaining but no

they had to try to make it "realistic" and also take their ridiculous wish fulfillment main character seriously

booooo, Scorpion

also LICD is indeed unbearable but that almost goes without saying

Ted from HIMYM wasn't awful in the beginning, but by the end he was horrible and no one seemed to notice (including, especially, the writers).

I think Barney started out awful, ended up kind of okay, and then turned awful again in the finale.

Oh, gods, yes. He was rotten. I swear I spent half my time watching the show going, "oh, for fuck's sake, Ted." I loved the episode where it turned out that he had been sitting alone in the bar the whole time, while everyone else was off being adults and having meaningful relationships. There was actual acknowledgment that he'd been going about his life in the completely wrong way.

Yup, completely agreed. I didn't mind him to begin with but he really got worse as the series went on to the point where I just did not care about him at all, go away Ted, no one cares.

Sora. Naruto. Any other unbearably cliché Gary Stu protags like them.

Also, Patrick Jane from the Mentalist.

Gwen from Torchwood. I get what they were trying to do with the character and every now and then they even managed to show hints of her supposedly great heart and ability to emphasise, but for the most part she was shallow, arrogant and smug. If it had only been Jack and herself who went on about how she is the one who makes the team better people I could have put it down to unreliable narrators, but from Word of God it's clear that the show runners think of her as that as well.

Gibbs from NCIS. That guy needs to be behind bars, even applying TV law he hasn't just crossed the line but pissed on it and head-slapped it into a cowering mess.

The protag from Star Ocean 4. In his defense, the entire game was bad, so it wasn't just him. But he was pretty bad.

Kvothe from The Name of the Wind. He's not useless, but god is the the worst Gary Stu I've seen in years. I fucking hated his smug ass. He was not interesting for one single moment.
tbh I don't think there were very many interesting characters - most of them came off as one-note to me. The girl was boring too.
Bast? idk.
I do not get why people love this book so much.

Mike Meekins from the Ace Attorney series.

Similarly, Pavel and GOOSEY from the Professor Layton series.

I don't mind minor characters as long as they serve a purpose. Even if they don't serve a purpose and are just there, I don't mind them as long as THEY'RE NOT EVERY. DAMN. WHERE. FILLING THE SPACE THAT MORE USEFUL OR RELEVANT CHARACTERS COULD BE.

Although I have to admit I'm not being fair -- technically, these characters trigger some kind of event, but really, aside from that they're useless and are easily replaceable for the role they do play.
