ONE favorite???? Are you kidding?????

Okay, fine, to narrow it down, I'm going to exclude the fics in all the currently-popular juggernaut fandoms, and also short little stories, and just focus on gen fics that are long and have a plot and involve ALL the above things that you mention in your comment. And I'm not going to go trekking through my bookmarks, or I'll get stuck going "omg I haven't re-read X for ages!!!" for hours if I do that.

Okay, so I lost all my gen fic bookmarks (and all my other ones too, mind you, but they aren't relevant right now), but I recently got into Welcome to Night Vale and found a few good ones.


"Snow Day" by MrTulkinghorn -- As far as strange occurrences go, a snow day in a desert is one of the strangest that the sleepy town of Night Vale has lived through. Cecil gives us the news and updates concerning this peculiar storm.
--- It's just a one shot and under 2k works, but it's written like an episode of the podcast is, including a weather rec. Even skips the canon-typical gushing about Carlos, which makes me personally sad, but fits your criteria.


I've got more I'm still reading through to see if they end up any good. Though if you aren't adverse to original fiction too, I'll recommend Three Skeleton Key to everyone for the rest of my life.

I was digging through one of the search/rec comms on LJ a couple months back and found someone reccing this one in a post that wanted genny Loki on Earth. This one's him with SHIELD. I really liked it. Very plotty stuff, no romance. Characters felt right, which is pretty important to me.
