It's a question of the ratio of food resources to population. If there's been a low human population but a moderately high fish or game population his whole life + his mother's life, he could grow over two metres tall and very muscular.

I'm not familiar with the setting, could that work?

Interesting point! It's a medieval Europe style fantasy setting, so I imagine most of the characters should be about as short as typical Europeans of that era. Its not something the manga delves deeply into, which just makes me wonder about more.
