This gets even worse every time it gets shortened to just "the raven".

yes! I read that recently and was like WTF?? Where'd that bird come from?? but from the way the fic was written, the three people in the room (Light, Misa, L) had already been inflated into 6 different persons (the pop star, the high school student, the younger man, his girlfriend and the detective), so It didn't really make a difference when a raven joined the group.

doesn't help that most of the time the pov character knows the man in question so why the fuck would they think of him that way?
