Yes. Without algebra you'd pretty much be standing around going "whuh?" half the time. I mean, even with non-number stuff, you have to understand how to put pieces together. But as I said below, even that's not the stuff you have to study in more advanced algebra courses.

Really, that's algebra? I figured that was, you know...counting. I mean - that's how you give change. Eighty-six cents, plus ten is ninety-six, plus four, so fourteen. I guess it can be *written* as an algebraic statement but...it's just counting.

Weird. I enjoyed algebra, until it was past mid-year and i just couldn't *remember* stuff anymore. Same with geometry. It was enjoyable until i just couldn't remember it well enough to do the later stuff. Bleh.

Tried to help my daughter a few times with her algebra, and it was so completely different than what I was taught - i was useless.
