sighed, smirked, laughed, or other action verbs used in place of said

more so if they are sighing and smirking entire paragraphs

YES, THIS.

Why are people so afraid of "said"? It's a mystery to me.

I hate that so, so much. It's simply WRONG.

This is okay: Alice smirked. "I agree," she said.

This is also okay: "I agree," Alice said, smirking.

This is WRONG WRONG WRONG: "I agree," Alice smirked.

There's also: Alice smirked. "I agree."

No "said" necessary in that kind of sentence, since it's obvious who's talking.

I know this is one of the most classic kinds of officially-condemned Bad Writing, but tbh it's never bothered me as long as it's not used in excess.

Lol, I go back and read stuff I wrote when I was eight, and I have literally replaced said with everything else. I grew out of that pretty soon after. Funny to think there are people doing what I thought was just a childish thing!

To be fair, you can "sigh" or "laugh" words, or at least say them while sighing/laughing at the same time.

Smirking, that's a little more difficult. I guess your mouth would have to look like it has a permanent medical issue.

Eh, I think it can work, more for characters who are unsympathetic. I do kind of imagine their mouths are looking a bit contorted.

Example from a news article about a politician:
“As you can imagine,” he smirked, “I was extraordinarily popular with the public employee unions.”
