I have no idea what this is about, but changing your name to get away from the image connected to it and then telling everyone that this is your old name... doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of changing the name in the first place?

couldn't resist

It does. I should know.

That's true. I've changed my name at least once recently, but I mostly did that to unify my online presence a little more (probably didn't hurt that it helped get rid of some baggage, but otherwise I have nothing to hide), but I'd imagine someone in PK/GP's case, it would've been more prudent to not openly telegraph the switch.

But eh, it's their prerogative.

I don't know, my first thought would be that fans would like to follow the new name while most people who don't like them wouldn't care enough to pay attention. Plus it's unlikely that any new fans will see an old tweet talking about their name change so the old and new names would still be unconnected for anyone who finds their art in the future.

Yeah, that's the only reason I can think of as well. I mean, getting away from drama isn't the same as not getting conneted to a certain fandom you used to draw in, but since people were saying it was the former, I was a bit confused.

I agree that it's a bit odd (and I don't know the story behind it), but maybe they (partially, at least) grew out of their name? If this person has a distinctive art style it would probably be difficult for people not to connect the art back to them anyway, so maybe they wanted to throw it out there, "Yea, you know me from here but I'm moving onto other things" and they won't mention it again.

Who knows though, I could be wrong.

Either way I understand wanting to change names (I've had some cringe-worthy ones too, and though this one is certainly a bit silly I still like it), but if they didn't want anyone knowing who they were...they should've made a clean break. (Since they tweeted about it, I have to assume they don't want that, which is okay too.)

Since I don't know the story behind it either, I assumed looking at the other comments here that they were trying to get away not just from the fandom connection but also from some toxicity/negativity connected with the old name. So yeah, could be either (I'm too lazy to look for any drama about this haha!)

I did think that was weird.

But then again, they might get accused of trying to pretend they're not all the same person, and called out for being sneaky. Perhaps they were just trying to prevent that?

I've changed user names 3 or 4 times. I don't publicly link my old names, but I don't deny they're me if asked, either. Some people seem to want to play detective if they suspect that secrets are being kept, even if they're not really.
