I hate how the writers basically ignore the effects this episode (the season 2 episode Revelations) had on Reid. Apart from a few episodes in the same season, it all gets ignored except for when the writers are trying to make a point. Even then, it's mostly kept to the drug addiction. The only time anything else got mentioned (saying he believed in the afterlife because of his near death experience) it was ooc and made very little sense in regards to what happened.

Pee pee doo doo criminal minds is a bad show

You shoulda rhymed.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
If I'm remembering correctly, the "drug addiction" thing was dropped because people hated it, and the writers figured that just ignoring it would be easier than actually tying up loose ends.

...So maybe I'm a little bitter.

Just like Nick on CSI BEING BURIED ALIVE!

Bah. Just another day at work.

Ohhh man, that episode was so great. I also really liked the one where he had a stalker. Poor Nick; why do you hurt so nicely?

Yeah but...

Dude, welcome to 90% of all action-adventure and procedural TV dramas EVER. This one incident in this one show is NOTHING.

If anything, times when having this kind of shit happen to a character actually is examined and brought up again and has lasting effects are very rare exceptions to the rule.

True. But I'm with OP, if moments like this got brought up more often it would add some depth to the characters. Give them something to feel/fear/loathe, which would increase audience emotional buy-in.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
it's a CBS crime procedural. if you're going in expecting consistency, or character growth or constant references to past events, that's your problem.

Eh, happens.

Any main character of a drama is bound to have something traumatizing happen to them that the writers don't really treat as traumatizing. Or the writers do for awhile and then the character gets over it and it is either never brought up again or just mentioned in passing, sometimes as a throwaway joke, because that's how trauma works, right?

Someone blown up in front of them, almost dying by being shot or stabbed, killing someone, being held hostage, being threatened, being kidnapped - these things are apparently fairly easy to get over.

And that's not even counting the tragic backstories.

Reid never claimed to believe in the afterlife now. He just said that he experienced something he can't explain.

Granted, this is addiction related, but I'm in season five and it was either this season or the end of four tbat Reid vehemently rejected narcotic painkillers after being dosed with anthrax. And I'm pretty sure it was season 3 (or late 2) that he got Michael Ironside's 1 year chip from NA.

So I wouldn't say it's all relegated to that season.

There was also the episode where Reid and JJ were arguing over her keeping the fact Emily was alive a secret, and he told her in the midst of said argument that he'd considered going back to the drugs when he thought Emily was actually dead. And that was in season 7. So yeah, they've touched on it a little bit here and there.

I agree it would be nice to see more in depth exploration of that and all the other issues Reid, as well as the rest of the team, have dealt with over the years, but at the same time, sometimes I think the subtle nods work just as well, too-like occasionally quietly checking in now and again, or something. Better than not referencing those moments at all, I suppose.

Someone had noted above that the fans objected to that storyline, too, so if that's the case, then I guess that's something one would have to take up with those fans, and would be symptomatic of the whole thing of fans seeming to dictate show storylines nowadays instead of the actual show writers...but that's a whole other topic.

There was the episode shortly after Revelations as well, the one with the soldier stuck in a PTSD flashback in the middle of a city, and this whole team of profilers misses/ignores that one of their own is struggling with PTSD as well!

My headcanon is that they all knew, but Gideon had assured them that he was helping Reid, but he was a tough-love/hands-off kinda guy, so his "help" was to make sure that no-one crowded Reid and harangued him into getting psychological help, despite that probably being what he needed. And then Gideon left suddenly, and Hotch stepped into that mentor role with Reid, and actually got him some proper help.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, I fully agree they were all aware that Reid was struggling. The little glances and worried looks alone were enough to prove that, as far as I'm concerned (and Emily in particular was constantly keeping an eye on him after all that went down, even trying to talk to him about it at one point).

But I can also go with your theory about Gideon's style of help, too. And in his defense, considering Reid does kind of tend to clam up when everyone crowds him or pesters him if something's bothering him, 'cause of his fear of being treated like a baby, I can see why Gideon would've thought that might be the best way to go initially. I think he "got" Reid's "I'm fine, I can take care of this myself" attitude ('cause I think he identified a lot with it himself).

As you note, though, clearly Reid needed a little more help than that, and I can easily see Hotch being the one to step in and handle it better in the way you describe. He's always been good at knowing how to talk to Reid like an equal, and Reid responds well to that.

I will also say that despite the very valid issues addressed in this secret and in some of the comments here, the episode referenced here is still my favorite episode in general. I just can't help getting caught up in the events throughout anyway, and I like the whole faceoff between Reid and Tobias throughout :).

I wished they'd never gone there in the first place. It felt like a cheap device to wring out more pathos from the show and every time it came up afterwards (as you said, mostly in relation to his drug addiction) felt equally cheap and contrived.

A lot of the time TV show characters are just completely fine after life-changing traumas. Criminal Minds is quite the offender.

Also high on the list: Supernatural, House, Sherlock, Grey's Anatomy.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sherlock went for complete AU as far as I'm concerned.

I saw a fan observation once that Reid's 'I don't do technology' thing didn't really come to the fore until after this episode. I doubt it was entirely intentional, but I do really like the idea that his dislike of it was exacerbated by Tobias using the internet as his primary method of hunting and broadcasting his kills.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I can totally go with this theory. 'Cause, yeah, in the early seasons we did see him having some understanding of technology and even using it occasionally himself. But this reasoning for why he'd stop or lose interest makes total sense.

Either that or I feel his attitude is similar to mine when it comes to technology. I have a general understanding of how to work a computer, I obviously use them professionally and personally, I certainly understand and respect the importance and use of technology in our everyday lives, that sort of thing. But I don't have any real interest in getting the latest iPhones or iPads or buying a Kindle or things of that sort, nor do I keep up well with or have much deep knowledge of updates of new versions of various technologies. I'm just a little more old-fashioned by my own choice. And I sense that's Reid's attitude when it comes to various aspects of modern culture sometimes.

If you think they didn't follow up on this, you didn't really watch the show. As someone pointed out up-thread, the show has brought this up in different ways multiple times. You must be a Reid fanboy/girl who's just mad that the entire show doesn't revolve around him because he has more character written about him than anyone else.
