It's a series based on the real feud between two families. That is Ellison "Cotton Top" Mounts of the Hatfield side of the feud.

In the series he's very simple-minded and gentle, and his fate is pretty tragic.

By most accounts, the real "Cotton Top" was far less sweet.

DA

I actually didn't know much about Cottontop's real personality (although I think he was considered "simple") but sort of assumed you made this secret to say that at least in the miniseries he did shoot and kill Alifair even though it was obviously a mistake/accident. In real life he was hung for the crime even though Cap Hatfield almost certainly was the one who did it.

It is still kind of tragic that he died for someone else's crime, regardless of personality.

Well, I think in real life he'd been more involved in some pretty despicable things than the series would have you believe.

I think when they refer to him as simple, they probably meant he was more of a big, dumb bully than naive. That seems to be the more consistent account, anyway.

The whole thing is depressing. So many people got pulled into the feud and lost people or got killed themselves.
