I understand the complaints to some extent, because the book didn't really connect her tough behavior to her experiences, no one ever says or thinks about the connection and it's never really unmistakably implied, it's just kinda...there. But yeah, it doesn't take a whole lot of pondering and analysis to make this connection -- fans have written character meta and analysis based on much less obvious connections between some characters' character traits.
