I have no horse in this race because all I know about wrestling ended with my brother's big fan phase in the early to mid-nineties, but I'm pretty sure that most people are aware that it's kinda dumb but like it anyway (or actually because of it)?

I don't think anyone who likes pro wrestling likes it for being smart.

That's me with my cousin-- I roll my eyes so hard every time she posts about a wrestling con she's gone to.

But I assume she does the same when I post about the fandom cons I go to. And honestly, I'm a little jealous about how much face-time she gets with her celebrities, for a fraction of what it would cost me to get photos with my favorite stars.

Yeah, we know it's dumb. There's no argument about this. We still like wrestling regardless.

The fact that it's dumb is what appeals. Competition, athleticism, emotion, drama, violence, sex, heroes, villains - wrestling has pretty much everything that humans are interested in at their most basic. So it's dumb. So what.

It's vaudeville. It's medieval morality play. It's melodrama. It's commedia dell'arte, full of Big Obvious Characters and Big Obvious Tropes, it's like every ridiculously overblown human spectacle ever, with acrobatics and pyro and attractive half-dressed people. I could argue about there being subtle moments, and I think there are, but that's bonus, not exactly the main draw.

"half-dressed" isn't exactly right. I think we're talking more like 20% dressed people. Which is still a bit too much, when I think about it. And now I need to think about that some more.

I hadn't watched any wrestling since the 60's because my grandmother loved wrestling.

Then in the 80's I took stage combat classes, mostly for the sword work, but we learned hand to hand and staff work, too. Then I had to sit and watch some wrestling with some people. I had to silently think "I learned that in class...that in class.....that's different."

I don't think wrestling is any better or worse than any other fandom. (Not that I'm particularly familiar with it, but still.) We all like something that someone would judge us for. *shrugs* (And I certainly have media I enjoy that I know most people would think of as 'dumb'. Even if that's true, doesn't mean you can't enjoy it regardless.)
