Star Trek something

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Which one is this? I'm thinking V or VI.

OP. Shit! It is V. I just assume Star Trek fans know those things. :P

Star Trek fans definitely do know these things.

V is "the camping movie" and no fan who has seen this scene wouldn't recognize this picture ;)

Mmmmm, I saw that wretched film and I've blocked out most of it, so I didn't recognize it. (The worst part was that I convinced some non-fans to come try a Trek film!)

Pretty much! I watched it exactly once. It was so absurdly not-Trek, too. (-_-)

James Doohan made the very good point that Scotty would know the Enterprise as well as his own self, being the top engineer in Starfleet, so for Shatner to script in a moment where he bangs his head against a pipe is just absurdist comedy that detracts from the character.

Ditto Nichelle Nichols doing a sort of fan-dancer thing. It just doesn't fit with Uhura's character, I don't think.

So am unsurprised Gene Roddenberry essentially de-canonized the movie.

You know for all it's faults, Star Trek V is funny, and enjoyable to watch if you don't take it seriously.

"I am preparing to toast a Marsh Mellon."

So a rewatch probably wouldn't ruin it.

But you should try watching Star Trek IV, it's even funnier, and a really good movie (though kind of... okay very preachy).

IV and VI are my two favorites. :)

But what do you do after you toast a marshmellon?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually never liked IV very much.

I love V and it has the advantage of feeling like a Star Trek movie: I mean, it's in space, the trio are together and it's about something philosophical that actually comes across as ridiculous. Star Trek IV is in the present, splits the trio up (with Spock not even having most of his marbles back anyway by that point) and is about finding some whales. I mean, it's great but it's like it succeeded by not being Star Trek.

Funny, I've always said IV feels the most like a Trek movie. There's still plenty of great interaction between the main trio, even with the time to do spend apart.

"Forgive me Doctor; I'm receiving multiple distress calls." "I don't doubt it."

It's a movie where not a phaser is fire (Well Chekhov tried), and peaceful applications of technology save the day, with a message for the modern day audience.

Seems pretty Trek to me.

The message of V seems muddled, Sybok says we shouldn't be afraid of the unknown, which is one of the core messages of Trek, but that almost gets everyone killed. I enjoy V, but I like to jokingly say "What does God need with a Starship," is the theological question of our times... because I think V's reflections on pain, reliance on gods, and braving the unknown all get very muddled.

That's ST IV: The Voyage Home! :)

That is the absolute best Star Trek movie. The best.

The Search for Spock is the best! :)

That one was lots of fun.

The Whale Movie is the best.

The beginning and ending to that movie are amazing. The rest is...meh (except the "Why does God need a Starship?" line), but the beginning and ending...that's gold.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
The MST3K watch or this made it even better.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
It is a crap Star Trek movie, but it is a great space-comedy movie.

Have you ever watched predator (even sober)?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's hilariously macho while also super unintentionally homoerotic.
Great dumb one liners, great dramatic deaths.
See the youtube opera 'If it bleeds, we can kill it" for a taster.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The movie as a whole is horrible - however! The camping scenes are amazing. Well-written, well-acted. Really, really wonderful.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hate to tell ya - and I'm a hardcore TOS fan who knows all the original cast films by heart - don't watch that film sober. It is bad. I mean, really really bad. You're one of the few people I know who had such a nice experience with it.
