Filler arcs that you liked

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Pick a TV show, or a comic/manga/webcomic, that has a long central arc (or several). Most shows/comics like this also have filler arcs, that don't really have much to do with the main plot. A lot of people complain about filler arcs, but there are some that are really good and well-done and enjoyable. What are some examples of filler arcs that you really enjoyed?

I am enjoying all the episodes of X-Files. Then again, I think most of X-Files is filler episodes.

Lol I particularly like the ones where Mulder has a love interest and Scully is SO OVER IT. i.e. his ex-English girlfriend (when Scully rolled her eyes I almost died laughing), entomologist Bambi, etc.

I think X-Files was a case of a series where I liked filler episodes better than arc episodes. I disliked the aliens conspiracy storyline.

The Noa arc of Yu-gi-oh.

I did too, but then, I skipped over it the first time through and only saw it after finishing Battle City.

I semi-feel the same way about DOMA - I really liked the characterization stuff with Yami's relationship with Yugi and it has some of my favorite scenes in the whole show, like the final duel where Dartz fucks his mind up so badly. But on the other hand it was SO LONG and so jarringly different from the Egypt stuff coming right after Battle City. It could have easily been 1/2 as long.

I like DOMA primarily for Rafael, who was one of my favorite minor characters, Amelda pretending to be Pegasus and giving Kaiba-boy a wiggins, and Kaiba finally working WITH Yami no Yugi.

I think the animation in Noa was some of the best in the series -- and as a hardcore Kaiba fan, I couldn't fault the delicious backstory bits either.

Yes, the tag-team between Yugi and Kaiba in DOMA was fantastic. Also, Kaiba managing to fend off his soul getting stolen long enough to set up one last card? A+

Also, when it comes to Noa, the Abridged episodes for that arc were some of the funniest ones ever. :D "Thomas was very angry because someone had turned him into a dragon, and now all the other trains didn't want to talk to him. What a load of wankers, Thomas said."

I thought the Noah arc really sucked all the wind out of Battle City's sails and it was hard to get the momentum back. But that's more a problem with the placement, not content.

Good point. (Although I found the Battle Royale and the finals rather dull anyhow; all the quarterfinal duels on the Battleship were much more interesting.)

(Need I mention I enjoyed the crap out of Jou vs Kaiba, however?)

I think either the Noa arc or the DOMA arc (or perhaps both? idk) were tossed in because Takahasi was taking so long to finish the manga.

I felt that the finals were somewhat duller precisely BECAUSE they had lost the momentum from before (though I guess there's also the fact that they were inevitably more predictable than the battleship quarterfinals -- obviously it was going to come down to Yami vs Yami Malik). But the Yami Malik vs Jounouchi battle was my favorite.

I liked most of the Battle Royale though - it felt kind of like having a whole culture of weird semi-medieval honor dueling being opened up to be played around with for a string of episodes, with all kinds of people just challenging each other willy nilly.

I saw a post on tumblr about Inuyasha, and it reminded me that I used to love the Inuyasha filler episodes where he was having shenanigans in the future. Ridiculous? Yes. Did I love them? Also yes.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: Bleach's Bount arc.

Also the Doma arc from YGO; I thought it was the weakest of the five seasons in the show, but nonetheless I enjoyed it for the stuff it had.

Argh I replied to the wrong thread earlier

The entire season 2 of full metal panic is basically filler so when you go back to the main theme it gives you so much tonal whiplash.
