Re: Would you die for someone?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... probably not, realistically.

I mean, if I knew for a fact that if I died for someone, they would go on to, I don't know, end world hunger or magically stop global warming or something else amazing and wonderful and unlikely to happen otherwise, I'd like to think I would do it. But I can say whatever I want about that, because it's never going to happen.

So then what about people I care about? Well, I have friends, but they're not that close. I love my parents a lot, but they'd hate it if I died for them. My sister... mmmaybe. She wouldn't thank me either, though.

Risk my life for someone, that's more likely -- if I thought I had a good chance of actually helping, and not making the situation worse.

On the other hand, all that is from the perspective of 'take action, and you die and they live, otherwise the reverse'. I would probably not take the action. If you turn it around and make it 'take action, and they die and you live, otherwise the reverse' I probably still wouldn't take the action. I wouldn't give my life to save theirs, but that doesn't mean I'd take their lives to save mine.
