Progressive movements also have hegemonies, and those hegemonies echo the ones found in larger society. White men are hegemonic in the gay movement and white women are hegemonic in the feminist movement. It's not through any conscious effort or intention, but the hegemony still determines what the movement generally cares about.

Saying "white feminism" doesn't mean feminism is bad or a failure -- it's just an acknowledgement that white women are the ones driving the truck, so to speak, or that the face of the movement is white.

Just realized I probably should have said "White men are hegemonic in the LGBT movement" instead of "gay"...
