There's all sorts of good reasons for advertising stories. And what are fic comms for, if not to let people know there are stories out there that may be of interest.

There is a difference between sharing and spamming. And spamming (of all kinds) is annoying as hell.

But tbf the secret doesn't specify spamming. It says advertising.

"Way more effective than spamming fic communities or your fandom tags."

Okay ...you got me there.

But it kind of muddles the message of "spamming is bad" with comments about how there is no way to promote yourself that isn't obvious and obnoxious or that ALL advertising of fanfics is bad.

I agree. Instead of "No way," "Better Ways" would make more sense.

Also maybe this is stupid but since the OP is so staunchly anti-fic advertising, I can't help but wonder if what they consider 'obnoxious promotion is what other people would consider obnoxious promotion.

Mostly because of experiences, I used to know someone who got all in a tizzy when they saw fics with their least fave pairing pop up on the top of fic lists or art of their least fave pairing and be all "ASSADFFDADFAD THEY'RE SHOVING IT IN MY FACE!!11!!1". They did that with any fic that had a thing they disliked. So...yeah.

Yeah, that's what I would've liked to have seen. The way the secret is written implies to me that a good fic will reach its audience naturally, and that's... not how it always works, especially if your fic is in a small fandom. Hell, even in a larger fandom, fics can get drowned out in the noise ratio. Which is why I mentioned above, "appropriate" ways to advertise your fic, like communities where that's the point. I'm sure there are Tumblrs and the like too.

Except that it specifically says spamming?

It says more than one thing
