Haha not OP but that would totally fit. I was really active in that fandom at the time and I was always so confused about Matt's popularity. I know he was sort of a good looking extra, but fandom treated him like he was an actual character and not fodder for Mello to converse with rather than just being boring and solo. And Matt/Mello was like the most popular pairing besides of course L/Light.

I was so confused once I read the manga for the first time. The popularity of Matt in fandom made me believe that he had a great role. And then he has like what, not even 20 panels?

I guess it was just convenient that Mello could be paired up with someone hot.

I don't think he even has 20 panels. I think he's in something under ten, and only has a handful of lines. But hey, I can't judge people for pairing just because he's hot. Though it seemed like canon was bending itself far more to Mello/Near... which I myself don't like, but at least the manga gives the pairing more to work with?

Oh, I didn't make myself clear, I don't judge Matt/Mello shippers at all! I just never understood the reason why it is so immensly popular; but then, ship and let ship.

Yes, the manga gave much more subtext for Mello/Near. But then, I have the impression that Near isn't all that well liked by the fandom, I've seen a lot of dislike and hate for his character.

Matt on the other side was a lot harder to hate, as he had such little panel appereance and was on Mello's side, who always seemed to be very popular.

It was definitely more than 20 panels, but not. by. much.

Source: the collage I once made of Matt's entire presence in the manga. Not because I liked him, but because I couldn't believe what a huge fanbase he had and wanted something tangible to boggle at.

+1, due to fandom I totally didn't believe Matt was dead and right to the end of the manga I was waiting for him to come back and have all that interaction with Mello I was expecting. But nope! He was dead!
