Characters who are bad that you would like to see turn good in canon

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
What characters would you like to see a redemption arc for? And/or you could actually believe them turning good at some point (or at least neutral) given the right storyline?

Peter Hale on Teen Wolf. I'd hoped Malia would either be the catalyst to make him do good or the trigger that makes him really bad (as he tries to twist her into stand with him against Scott), but that all seems to be moot now.

I just wanted him to be a bit more good for the Stiles/Peter fanfic. I am a terrible person. >.>

Lol. I like the idea of Stiles being part of Peter's pack and kind of evil for a while, but for some reason I just...don't ship him, really.

Guy Gisborne, Moriarty, Voldemort (it's a challenge and usually includes time travel) and some less known characters.

Have you ever found a good Voldemort-turns-good fic? Because that sounds intriguing if done well.

DA

I have.

This one: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/2595818/1/Rectifier

It's incomplete (and probably dead) but still great.

It's kind of an AU fusion though (it features a Voldemort from another universe coming to the canon universe -- AU!Voldie/Tom is still a sociopath but good, but it shows how small differences in Dumbledore's actions helped him to realize that he would screw himself by becoming a Dark Lord). I really enjoyed it.

Oooh, thanks! I will check it out :) shame it's incomplete, but hey, 76k gives a nice chunk.

Nothing off the top of my head. They're mostly WIP for some reason. Black Bunny is a funny one, it's a slash fic.

you might like the Moriarty books by Michael Kurland.

I think that it could have been interesting for Maedhros to get more of a redemption arc. He and Maglor did get to raise Elrond and Elros, but while his suicide was perfect story-wise, it could have been nice for him to survive too and get more of a redemption arc. Actually, come to think of it, there aren't many redemption arcs in Tolkien. I think even Sarumon going good again could have been interesting.

That's one of the drawbacks of Tolkien to me. There were characters who could have gotten a good redemption arc, or fucked up but it was still possible for them to fix it, but they always die after. Bleh.

Don't even get me started on my ideas for a Seth Rollins redemption arc.

Loki in the MCU

I hope that when Loki's character is done, they end him in a good place. I don't necessarily need to see him as a good guy before that but I'd like to see him redeemed in the end. (But only in the movie-verse.)

I really, really don't want him to get a full on redemption arc because that will only encourage fans to see him as good from the beginning and increase the woobie!Loki fanons. I want him to go even more evil.

I wouldn't let crazy fans dictate anything. They're going to see him as good from the beginning no matter what. They don't need any encouragement. It's stupid to want anything in relation to what they're doing or going to do.

That isn't the only reason I don't want this. I think Loki is more interesting when he's outright evil. He was at his most interesting for me in Avengers. I found him boring and annoying when he was angsty and only a little evil in Thor.

*fistbump of solidarity on this unpopular opinion* I think he's a lot more interesting when he's evil. I also think he was pretty far gone in Thor, and am actually a little creeped out by people who try to excuse his actions in that movie. And then we have Avengers, where he really does go all out on the assholery.

There were several points where he could have turned aside from the path he was on. He chose not to do that.

He chose to do horrible things like letting enemies into his father's weapons vault, resulting in four deaths, two of them loyal Asgardian guards who were just doing their jobs. He chose to lie to Thor about their parents, when Thor was at his lowest point, just to be cruel. He chose to send a weapon of mass destruction to Earth, not only to kill Thor, Sif and the Warriors Three, but also to wipe out an entire town to hide the evidence of his crimes. And then when his plans blew up in his face, and all the evil things he'd done were revealed and everyone was asking him why, he chose to off himself rather than take responsibility for any of it.

I'm not sure they could manage it at this point tbh, even after Avengers I think a full-on Loki redemption would have been pretty out-there(at most I could see him making a truce with Thor). But with Thor 2 and him lying to Thor(again) and wresting control of Asgard for himself, yeah, boy's gone bad for good I think.

Re: Characters who are bad that you would like to see turn good in canon

I read Thor 2 differently, and I think it will depend on what wasn't shown and what happens next (i.e. what kind of king Loki turns out to be). I think Loki was actually injured, and him taking the throne was just taking advantage of an opportunity that presented itself. Much as I loathe that they fridged Frigga, since they've gone that route and made Loki feel responsible for her death, I think there's a path of redemption for him. This was actually why I want to see him redeemed, from what they were teasing in Thor 2 BTS.

Not saying that it would necessarily work or they're going that route, but I feel like it's set up so that Loki finally getting the kingship could be used as a catalyst for change for him.

Tbh I find his 'death'scene hard to get a proper read on, it doesn't help that it was supposed to actually be his death in the movies so from an out-of-universe perspective I know that at that point what he's showing is genuine, because at the time it was meant to be. But then they decided to change his death and had him taking control of Asgard and letting Thor once again think that he's dead(while believing that he died heroically no less). So it's up in the air as to whether it was all a trick or a situation he took advantage of, and honestly neither option is all that great on his part.

We've definitely got to wait 'till Thor 3 to see how this mess gets sorted out but I'm personally not going in expecting Loki to somehow redeem himself when he's shown no signs of doing so thus far.
