I do think it gets made out to be somewhat better because it ended early. I don't know that the show could have sustained being as good as it was if it went further. But I recently rewatched it and it is still very, very good.

I do think it gets made out to be somewhat better because it ended early.

Particularly because it ended SO, SO early, when most of the bigger picture stuff was only faintly beginning to take shape. I think because of that, people who liked the show have a tendency to take as given that everything it seemed like the show could have become was what it was going to become if given the chance. So it's not even just that the show ended before it could screw up, but that we tend to give it credit for more than the tip-of-the-iceberg part which actually exists.

That said, Buffy did grow into itself tremendously after S1, so Whedon fans do have some basis for their belief that Firefly would have only become better with age (for the first few seasons anyway).

Exactly. We don't actually know if it would have continued to be good or improve, though given Whedon's track record it seems likely. But what we do have is really, really good.

Agreed.

Well most series usually don't hold up the same quality for several seasons, but Firefly didn't even get a chance. They had a whole big universe of possibilities and an interesting group of characters, and what we saw barely scratched the surface of it's potential.

Saying it would have eventually lost quality is not fair, because all of the episodes they did have were amazing. It's not like it was going downhill, it was just starting to pick up. There was so much more they could have done but it never got a fair chance.

I know the movie tried to tie up loose ends with River and what the Reavers were, but I think River was an interesting character that could have a lot more done with her. Also hated how they killed off Wash and Book.

I don't think Firefly fandom is as big or loud to be considered annoying unless you were deliberately placing yourself in places where they discuss stuff. But if they are still upset, it's for a good reason.
