Antichrist is the only thing I've seen in the horror genre in the past decade to actually disturb me, so.

...Maybe I should amend that to would heartily recommend to horror buffs.

I wouldn't even do that. It's more like the sort of movie you recommend to people you're not friends with because you find them kind of creepy.

I found Antichrist to be disturbing for the sake of disturbing, because we're past the era where things like Return of the Living Dead (as a completely off-the-top-of-my-head example) are considered "video nasties" and therefore the envelope must be pushed further and further to make a point that was already made 30 years ago.

Coming out of a psych background, I found it to be less shock for shock's sake (although to be fair there was almost certainly some of that) and more of a commentary on the state of care for people who suffer from mental illness.

The dialogue and character interactions were so bitingly on point with the depiction of how "therapists" treat their patients, although the outcome was obviously pretty overblown (for the sake of art?). I found it to be a highly effective criticism of the trends in psychological care at the time.
