(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)Wild pet theory of mine but I honestly think Moffat reads far too much Tumblr, and bases all his decisions on the squeeing fans therein. E.g., everyone played up the "fluffy" moments in S2 Sherlock (which didn't exist), Moffat thought that's what "the fandom" wanted, ergo, S3 Sherlock. By my theory, all the squeeing and gifsets and general stanning over River on the Tumblr echo chamber makes Moffat think rehashing a character that died the first time we saw her is a great idea. (Can she die again please?)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 06:42 am (UTC)(link)Moffat strikes me as having a very ambivalent (and kind of immature) relationship with his shows' fanbases. Mostly, he just really seems to want to be the puppet master. He wants to tease the fans with what they want, and sometimes give it to them if what they want is also what he wants. But at the same time, he seems to be one of those creators who is annoyed when people want different things from his shows than he does. So you either get Moffat creating narrative road blocks to attempt to herd viewers into seeing the story his way, or you get Moffat catering to his own self-satisfied ideas of what the fans want, and thinking himself very clever for it.
What bearing this has on River's return I don't know. Except that I guess I at least partially agree with your pet theory. I think River is a part of the show he favors himself, and therefore fans' appreciation of her is something he's eager to cater to.
Needless to say, I'm not much of a Moffat fan. His work has its strong points, certainly, but I always end up feeling like there's nothing real in it; like it's all just a fancy but flimsy construction.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-09 11:22 am (UTC)(link)I agree that Sherlock S3 is waaaay too fluffy. My personal theory though isn't so much that Moffat wanted to please the fangirls on Tumblr, but more that he was seeing the reactions of Sherlock haters saying they found him too much of an arsehole in S1 & 2 and not "like canon Holmes". More so when Elementary started and the fans there compliment how much kinder that Sherlock is compared to Cumberbatch's.
So now we have Sherlock making soppy best man speeches and crying over his pet dog. :P

Maybe. But he also cons a woman into thinking he wants to marry her, jokes about the grief he caused John, jokes about drugging John, and makes John think he's going to die in an explosion. I agree that the tone of S3 was weirdly fluffy (I'd call it hammy, personally), but if anything I'd say S3 Sherlock is more of an arsehole than ever. So if Moffat's aim was to please the portion of the audience who wanted him to be less of an arsehole I'd say he did a truly atrocious job of it.
