Where are these people I'm supposed to be looking at? Back in 2005 being picked apart by everyone else on the forum they decided to troll?

Discussions like that just happened here a few days ago. A named user insisted also insisted they saw no Japanese culture in Sailor Moon.

Uhhh wtf (at you). I just reread that thread, and the user said that in her memory upon watching it, she couldn't specifically remember any major clues that it was necessarily set in Japan. So what exactly are you trying to claim? I think that would be very typical for young people who aren't familiar with Japan, who can easily assume it's just set in a generic "city" (with some fictional elements). Not everyone is an expert in Japanese culture, or for that matter, an adult when they watch children's TV. And on the flip side, a lot of anime are actually set in fictional cities, that may have some Japanese elements but elements from other cultures as well.

At any rate, this has nothing to do with anime fandoms being enormous, as well as shipping, and most of those characters are Japanese.

That statement's reaching a bit, don'cha think?

They even said that they're not familiar with anime - their daughter was the one that watched the Sailor Moon anime, and likely the English dub which sanitized a lot of the show as it is - so you really can't expect them to be immediately aware of telltale markers that a character is ~obviously~ Japanese or that it's ~obviously~ set there. Hell, I watch a lot of anime, and it's still hard to tell sometimes if a city is set in Tokyo or some fictionalized city altogether unless there's a shot of an area of a very well-known location, or they toss around names like Shibuya and whatnot. They weren't saying that they saw no Japanese culture as in arguing that it didn't exist at all, but that they simply were not really well-versed in it so these cultural markers weren't as evident to them.
