Personally I only check bookmarks and filter those. It gives you a lot of dublicates (if a fic is bookmarked five times every single bookmark will be listed), but that also means if there's a fic you originally skipped because the summary didn't sound that appealing at first glance might start to interest you if you see it recced again and again.

If that's too much hassle, check how many bookmarks a fic has. If it's a lot chances are it's good, though popular crap will have a lot of bookmarks as well.
