Well yes, it's generally not done.

If someone asks for recs, they mean recs of fic you've read and liked, not recs of your own fics. That is a little obnoxious.

The simple reason for this is that most writers are terrible at assessing the quality of their own fics.

Okay to be fair, you are right there. But I still don't think its true that advertising a fic in ANY WAY will always be bad.

Also there's nothing wrong with thinking your own work is good, just as long as you don't go into "it's better than theirs" territory with it. I'm fucking sick of seeing people trip over themselves about how awful and shit their writing is and stuff because so many people like to act like any kind of confidence is horrible and makes you an awful person.

There's nothing wrong with a self-rec, especially in a rare-pairing, especially if you phrase it as, "If you don't mind a self-rec, I wrote blah-blah." Seriously, they're asking for recs, and they get a rec. They can always ignore it.

Yeah, no? Maybe if you only read popular ships... if I were this picky about asking for recs for my relatively obscure pairings, I'd get nowhere fast. I can assess the quality of the stories I choose to read just fine.
