This is a Glee fanfic, yes. But it is one of my absolute favourites because it's so real and depressing but also hopeful. It's about Burt, Kurt's Dad, being homophobic before accepting that his son is gay.

Here is a quote: "Family sticks together wouldn't be the saying of the day. It would be that Burt had had a close one, maybe. That he never trusted Katherine anyway. Never liked her. That maybe Burt was better off without a fag for a son. That maybe Kurt needed to be away, in a place for people like him. That they'd stick together, the two of them. And then there would be more silent dinners with his father while they coped with their losses, more invitations to drink and drown the past. That little ember of pain flared into something much larger, and Burt realized that he could be looking at his own life. Not in thirty years, but in thirty days. There weren't many times that life offered so clear cut a crossroads, with only two choices and two outcomes. But this was one of those times."

OK, the first two fics that come to mind are:

Hannibal (Will/Abigail, NC-17) -- Gun Shy, by black_lodge -- something about the slow burn, the precise way the burn burned, the characterization of Will as so earnest and well-intentioned, so...precious I just want to crush him, and so does Abigail... I left two comments on this fic, years apart, to praise it; I rec it all over the place; IDK I just love it, okay.

Supernatural (gen, no pairings, PG-13) -- Red, by big_pink -- a novel-length retelling of "Little Red Riding Hood," set among the world of lumberjacks in the Pacific Northwest pine forests. Also the first fic I ever printed out to read when away from a computer. I haven't been in this fandom since season 3 (2008-9?), but I remember that this writer was my favorite in the Supernatural fandom -- everything else she wrote was gold, but this story was a diamond.

HELL YES, Big Pink. Excellent writer. She's currently publishing, if you go to her LJ you can find a link to her book, I think it just came out in the last six months.

Sadly, my favorite fanfic was hosted on the author's personal LJ, and the LJ itself was purged a while back. I didn't find out until it was too late to save it, and I'm still struggling with the idea that I may never be able to read it again. (The fic in question was Henry Spencer, Matchmaker by Ryann_Blackwood, a Shawn/Lassiter fic from Henry's perspective for the Psych fandom.)

This Pendent Heart, a Princess Tutu fanfic. (Yes, the title is a pun.) It's the best attempt I've seen at a Season 3 for Tutu, pulling at the plot threads the finale left dangling and providing an answer for some lingering questions. We find out what the Raven really is, Rue gets a chance to be useful, Fakir gets some good development, and Duck finally gets the ending she deserves.

Also, read fic 5 ("At the Edge of the World") after Amon Hen but before Isengard in "The Heart of the Journey". That's aproximately when it was released and it makes bit in Isengard make a bit more sense, especially in Shakurán's scenes.
