Somthing possibly racist that I wonder about the Japanese

Second comment for spoilers for MGSV

Re: Somthing possibly racist that I wonder about the Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with their men? Look at the media they put out, even the most celebrated media created by the most celebrated Japanese men is really shockingly immature (not to say flatly offensive) when it comes to women.

I'm thinking specifically about MGS V here. **Spoiler warning**
So Hideo Kojima made the fap-bait character wear a bra and panties, and the whole time people were calling him on his misogynistic bullshit, he kept saying "You'll feel guilty when you find out why she's wearing it" which I always thought was bullshit, but I kept my mouth shut until I saw his big emotional reveal. She has a parasite that makes her have to breath through her skin and clothes literally suffocate her. That's it. How fucking backwards are these people? I mean western men are douchbags about this stuff, but at least they have come to acknowledge that "If I make up a good reason to justify her dressing like a bikini model, this does not mean that my own sick reasons for doing it in the first place will be forgotten." I mean, seriously, It's like teenage boys saying things like "No, it's k because she comes from an alien culture with no nudity taboo" and acting like the bullshit justifications hide the fact that the driving force behind the nudity was not the "Characters culture" but their decision to have a woman to objectify. You can make up all the reasons you want to explain why Ivy from soul calibur dresses like a fucking dominatrix, but that doesn't change the fact that we all know the only reason that you cared about when creating the character is "I wanted to see giant tits".

Thing is, only the worst mouth-breathers and stupidest of teen boys in the west actually believe these justifications fool anyone or make it ok, but in Japan, we have a grown-assed man of some professional standing genuinely believing that the bullshit reasons he makes up change the fact that he chose to have a conventionally beautiful woman walking around in almost nothing for any reason other than his own twisted sexuality.

And you see it fucking everywhere in Japanese media. Why are the japanese not able to see that the rest of the civilised world has left this shit behind. How can a whole culture which is in every other respect right at the forefront of the modern world not understand that their treatment of women makes them unacceptable as a culture in this day and age?

Re: Somthing possibly racist that I wonder about the Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, that is racist to think that one guy's comments are suddenly representative of millions of people. And what are you thinking, that a Western "professional" hasn't said the same thing in regards to objectifying brutalized women a thousand times? I mean what the fuck, do you think sexism and this exact brand of bullshit doesn't exist in, oh, every other country?

Japan as a country does have problems with sexism, this is true. But the problem is NOT simplified as "Japanese men are pigs". If you want to talk (maturely) about the sexism problem in Japan, we can do that. But it doesn't sound like you're really getting at that.

Re: Somthing possibly racist that I wonder about the Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you overstate how much this is only a Japanese thing. Western men may not come up with as many weird excuses for objectifying women, but they still do it and think it's okay. They still treat women like they're nothing more than fap and fuck fodder.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
What? You think all other kinds of media have left sexualization and objectification behind? The thing you're referring to are in American media. "Starfire loves to have sex because it's part of her culture and wears bikinis because the sun."

Re: Somthing possibly racist that I wonder about the Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
i think op means that the people in western media have stopped pretending that their made-up lore justifies the objectification. could be wrong, tho.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But what are your thoughts on their eyes, OP?

I think they're shifty

Re: Somthing possibly racist that I wonder about the Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My question is what is with thinking only Japanese men are like this? I have a friend with a specific problem with Japanese men too, and even though she hates all men she distinguished Japanese ones as particularly bad.

For your specific problem, the only thing I think might be confusing you is that different cultures tend to have different approaches to viewing fiction in general? And when Japanese writers talk about their work they tend to be more expressive and specific about the feelings that they hope their characters will inspire in people, which might have been the idea behind Kojima making that comment about feeling guilty.

But no there's nothing inherently Japanese in a man creating a female character who dresses minimally for "good reasons" and then defending those reasons with a straight face. An American guy, for instance, would probably be smug and imply that anyone who's offended just didn't ~understand~ that there's a ~good reason~ for her to dress that way.

OMG

Yes, you are racist.

Why are the japanese not able to see that the rest of the civilised world has left this shit behind. How can a whole culture which is in every other respect right at the forefront of the modern world not understand that their treatment of women makes them unacceptable as a culture in this day and age?

Literally, what the fuck? Sexism is alive and well EVERYWHERE. Maybe if you'd get out more you'd see that.
And FYI, media is not the same as real life.
If I based my opinions about the world around me on western media, I'd probably think 99% of women walk around practically naked for men's entertainment.

Contrary to what you believe, a lot of Japanese people (men included) are not okay with sexism.
SHOCKING, I KNOW.

You ask what's wrong with japanese men for being like teenagers? I ask what is wrong with japanese women that they let their men be like this.

What's your experience with Metal Gear OP? Have you just played the new one? Have you even played the new one or have you just read about it? Yeah, Quiet's fucking stupid, but in the past Kojima has created some wonderful female characters, some of the few I've found who resonate with me, and for that I'm willing to cut him some slack. In the past Metal Gear has featured females who geek out over movies, are crazy scientists bent on revenge, have the kind of daddy issues usually reserved for the male protagonist, and are the motherfucking mother of special forces. For what is essentially a military action game with a side of sci-fi/fantasy, it does a lot with its female characters, and though they are often sexualized it's usually supported by character development and balanced with a generous portion of sexy men. But Quiet is complete shit, I'll give you that, and this game gives the player no interesting women to balance her out.

I've come to a different conclusion, OP.

As a whole, the Japanese media I've consumed has WAY MORE badass female characters than western media. Look at any Final Fantasy game, look at many anime (Madoka and Utena are hardly the only anime driven by great women characters).

It's just ime people completely forget/ignore all those characters whenever they start freaking out over moe anime or a jiggle physics. Like the existence of harem shows completely erases characters as complex and wonderful as Misato Katsuragi or Tifa Lockheart. (Not to mention all those characters who might be fanservicey and ALSO interesting.)

The rest of the world hasn't left fanservice behind any more than Japan has. EVERY country produces media that's blatantly sexist, and EVERY country produces media that isn't.

Guys like that are part of a creepy subculture in Japan, just as they are part of a creepy subculture in your own country. I'm not sure that attitude isn't more mainstream in the USA (Hollywood) than in Japan.

Given how we get similar shit from braindead Western character designers all the time, that's pretty racist, but everyone's already pointed that out to you.

That said, that puts a serious damper on my desire to play the game :/ This is exactly the kind of shit that makes grown ups embarrassed of our genre, and as Quiet is one of the only female characters in it, it's not like she's balanced by anyone else awesome (a la The Boss).

Not to mention that mouth-breathing, fuck-tarded rationalization. Kojima, if she had to wear the "least amount of clothing possible" in order to breathe, she would be naked. Or at the very least, not wearing ripped fishnet stockings and an accent glove. You're not even trying, here.

why i want to know is why every Japanese movie I've ever seen, from Godzilla movies to Spirited Away has an obnoxious kid in it

Re: Somthing possibly racist that I wonder about the Japanese

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Does the original Godzilla have an obnoxious kid? I've only seen the version with scenes of Raymond Burr added, and it's been years.

I heard once that the thing with always having a kid started with the first Gamera movie. I'd assume the reason is the same reason Batman was given Robin: we want to sell to kids, so let's put a kid in so they have someone to identify with.
