Memorable fanfic comments you've seen

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Whether the laughable, the stupid, or the down right offensive; anyone who's read a lot of fanfic has probably seen some pretty remarkable feedback from their fellow readers. Please share some you've seen?

"I came several times reading this fanfic."

It wasn't a porn fic.

Ew.

(OP) I'll start - last week, I saw what I'm pretty certain was a round-about, passive-aggressive drive-by prompt. This comment didn't even bother with anything about the fic itself, apart from noting that it was an AU, and oh! commenter had an idea for an AU! Followed by, I swear to god, almost 500 words on this idea the commenter had, concluding with "Just wish I could write...."

I was just sitting, staring and thinking, "I'm pretty certain they're not gonna write it for you, mate!"

One of my fics got a review that I suppose was technically positive (the reviewer straight up said they thought the fic was of higher quality than other fics they'd read on the same site), but I got the impression there was a sort of... I guess you'd call it "backhandedness" to it?

I think they must have clicked on my fic thinking it was going to be terrible, but then ended up enjoying it.

I used to leave reviews like that in the past. It was in kind of a big fandom, where there were a lot of plots that were used frequently and also often executed poorly. So when I saw a fic that actually did one of those plotlines well it was legitimately a huge surprise for me.

Looking back I feel kind of guilty for indirectly saying I thought others' writing sucked and that I came into the fic I was supposedly praising expecting it to be more of the same. At the time I didn't think this was dickish, though-- I thought it was just the standard "X isn't usually my thing, but you made it work" applied to a different situation. It was only later that I realized how shitty it sounds.

For what it's worth, though, when I left reviews like that I did genuinely enjoy the fic and wasn't intending to sound insulting or elitist at all. Could be the same thing going with that review, maybe.

On one of my fics! The person started out praising me (one sentence or so) but then went on and on for paragraphs about a fic idea they were working on. Uh, my fic isn't a place to advertise your own fic. If you want to chat about that, message me or something. It ended up being more insulting than anything.

Sometimes I still cringe thinking back on a comment I saw a year or so ago on someone's fic. In it, the commenter said that the fic (a slash PWP) was so hot that they sent it to their straight male friend to embarrass him. I think they said that it was to see if it changed his mind about "yaoi", but they were quite clearly relishing his discomfort. It was like encountering a time traveller from 2005.

The author pointedly failed to respond.

Oh my god I hate comments like that. I also hate the ones that are like "I don't read slash because [reasons that are obviously homophobic and/or stupid] but your fic opened my eyes!"

Someone once left a comment claiming a completely fluffy gen fic of mine was "just like" a horrible real-life sex crime/murder case involving children.

The only point of commonality between my character and the real-life child rapist/murderer was, both of them worked at a school. The comment was stupid, inappropriate, and kind of vicious (in a fake-innocent way.) Once I got over the shock I deleted the comment. I've always kind of wondered how I had pissed that anon commenter off.

Ugh, what a bafflingly nasty thing to say to someone.

SA--yeah, I was pretty upset for a few hours and then I just deleted it. I didn't want that connected to my silly little story.

Oh wow what the actual hell?

Heh, yeah, my reaction exactly. I figure it must have been left by someone I'd annoyed in some way, because there was nothing in the story that could have prompted it.

The ones I've gotten on my own fic that are most memorable in the wrong way are from this one reviewer who seems to stalk me. I write two pairings. They love one of them and always write me nasty reviews whenever I write fics for the other pairing.
