Because for too many years all parties in Washington has been pumping out the meme that to be pro-America means opposing anything coming from Iran other than a declaration of surrender and a promise to do only what it is told by America. Real Americans don't believe in diplomacy, America doesn't have to negotiate with anyone. Both parties have been pumping that out for so many years it isn't funny. You can't just turn that tap off, once you've indoctrinated people and got them to build core personality components around something, that can't be easily reversed. Especially when one of the other components that has been drilled into Americans for decades is that changing your mind on something is a sign of weak moral fiber. American politicians are learning that the mob, once whipped up, is not so easily placated again.
