I didn't watch Stars much, but I remember Seiya in the anime being male in their every-day persona and female when transformed, so I can see where you're coming from.

All three Starlights did in the anime, but I only h/c Seiya because... see below.

Ah, I see. That makes sense!

I thought that was the story of Sailor Uranus in the French dub. When Haruka was not Sailor Uranus she was dubbed by an actual guy, then was dubbed by a woman while in her sailor outfit. Wikipedia tells me Haruka is "a woman with a guy's voice" in the French dub. Instead, nine year-old me legit thought men could be Sailor Scouts, but they would become biologically female when transformed.

Haha awww~ Don't worry, I was sometimes confused about Haruka's gender too! :P

men could be Sailor Scouts, but they would become biologically female when transformed.

That's what I thought about the starlights! That they where really male but could become female upon transforming.

I mean the Sailor Stars did turn into women when they transformed. Giving Seiya a trans headcanon works for me.

I'd be very much interested in details about this headcanon if you want to elaborate, nonnie.

It mostly comes from how much Seiya embraces the civilian identity compared to the other two Lights, who mostly put up with it for the mission's sake (Yaten seems particularly ill at ease to me). As seen in the anime, Seiya isn't only comfortable presenting as male but really thrives in this stereotypical life of a teen popstar heartthrob/big man on campus, adopting hyper-masculine activities and being generally at ease in a biologically male body (see: walking around someone else's house practically naked).

I think the anime's decision to have the Starlights change gender in their civilian identities is mostly dumb, but once you accept it for what it is, Seiya's case is pretty interesting, especially when you consider the character's behavior with those the teammates in the same situation.

I don't remember it all on details now but isn't this basically canon?
Even as a deliberate allegory if you don't think her transformation counts.
I do remember thinking they were all gender fluid anyway.

There are some people who might not even know they were the same because in some countries they dubbed it as the female version being the twin sister of the guys, smdh

The only thing you can say for certain is that they're not cis men. Due to the explanation provided in the anime for the civilian identities, they could be cis women, but I think a nonbinary or even trans reading for any of the three is definitely possible.
