Personally, I think hate speech should be called out on, haters don't have a right to freedom from criticism. Unless you're trying to be tactful for peace's sake. I've walked a pretty difficult line being gay with a very homophobic grandmother.

i think if you live with the person, sometimes it's easier to just keep quiet, otherwise you'd constantly be fighting.

but on the other hand, there is limits. like, some things you should call people out on.

This is the thing. I'd actually feel more comfortable calling out his homophobia if I wasn't bi. He's pretty aware that I disagree with him already, but I'm scared that if I debate him on this he'll figure it out.

And as for the abortion thing, I honestly don't think that's an issue you can really debate, at least with his reasons for his views. Either you think a fetus is already a person or you don't. He's actually one of the few consistently pro-life anti-abortion people I know in that he's for contraception, against the death penalty and guns, and for social programs to help mothers. He's just also for laws restricting abortion. I'm of the strong view that men don't get a say, but how do I say that to my father?

That's so hard having to hear first hand this ignorant hateful shit that impacts on your identity.

...I ended up with selective deafness, but not til I moved out.
