I would say that the gay rumor thing is due to how the audience would react, not the director's whim. Or the part is for a straight character as most are. Idk if its self loathing or the idealization of the straight man that runs in a lot of gay communities- lol "str8-acting"- but I would put my money on the latter there too.

Anyway my original point was that yea in some specific places like that hypothetical casting director or some hypothetical fashion designer gay men are practically equal, and they may have more -of- those places than the LBT groups, but those areas aren't everywhere nor do they include all gay men, so it makes no sense to exclude the majority because a small number are in better situations

You're saying the second part like it has nothing to do with the homophobia of the first.

Did a bit of Googling.

Sounds dreamy. https://books.google.com.au/books?id=8IoG84QtfNIC&pg=PA261&lpg=PA261#v=onepage&q&f=false "The golden rule is discretion." (for everyone not just actors)

"Yes, yes, yes, finally someone is calling the industry on their bullshit! Casting directors are the worst! If they even hear a rumor about you and another man they wont call you in for a part. Seriously, they are scum.

—Closeted "and staying there til things change" actor who wants to work"

"You'll never meet a greater enemy of gay male actors than a gay male casting agent. If you're a gay male actor, do not be scene out and about town. Do not go to gay parties. You will soon be written off as "just another fag" and the part will go to the dreamy inaccessible hunk the casting director self-loathingly lusts after.

Rupert Everett on Hollywood: "Show business is ideally suited for heterosexuals. It’s a very heterosexual business. It’s run mostly by heterosexual men. There’s a kind of pecking order. ... It’s very, very conservative, Hollywood. It pretends it’s a liberal world."
