I don't really see how slash fans are doing anything wrong though?

Sending death threats or harassing the creators is wrong, yeah. But all shippers do that (HELLO Zutara shippers and Harmonians!).

But why shouldn't they petition for their ship to be canon as long as it's done respectfully?

I mean, if the characters have only 2 second of screen time together then yeah, it's obviously a dumb crackship. But if they already have a deep bond, why not ask?

I'm not really comfortable with shippers using LGBT as an excuse to whine about their ship. I suppose there's some legitimate discontentment about under-representation but imo most slash shippers who whine about it don't seem like they genuinely care about LGBT representation.
And so it just feels.. kinda gross.

Like how in the old days how some people claimed they want to see gay marriage legalized because they want to see their OTP get married or something.

I think if LGBT fans ask for representation, it's cool. Though, granted, I don't think it's fair to demand that ONE SPECIFIC pairing be that representation.

But, overall, I think as long as fans are respectful and realize that they don't own canon, it's not wrong to ask for your ship to be made canon.

And having a large group of voices can definitely make a creator aware that there's support for it. Sometimes I do think that creators hesitate in portraying LGBT relationships because they're afraid that they'll lose more of an audience than they'll gain. So showing popular support can be helpful.

Trouble is that so many people do it disrespectfully.

Agreed 100%.

"Trouble is that so many people do it disrespectfully."

It doesn't help that some don't think about the ships they're asking to be canon. Like, the issue with making Sam/Dean on Supernatural canon isn't that it'd be a gay couple but that'd be incest.

sorry i didn't clarify. het shippers who whine to the creator about how their ship needs to be canon are annoying lil shits too.

they're writing their story, not yours.
