Maybe I'm in the minority, but I loved CVA. Ivan was delightful, we got more By and Alys and Simon, and Tej/Rish/the Cordonah family were great additions.

Same...I was laughing out loud through much of it, Ivan & Tej are adorable and the Simon plot was amazing.

But oh, yeah, this series has horrendous cover art. I literally try to avoid looking at it.

I think part of it might be tonal differences in the story. It was Ivan's story. I expected it to be zany, wild, and full of WTF hijinks. Which... is pretty much exactly what CVA is! But if you were expecting the general thoughtfulness that exists in other books in the series even when stuff is zany, yeah, I can see being disappointed. Ivan isn't that way at ALL, unless another character beats him over the head with a clue-stick, so I figured that wouldn't be present.
