Plot twists and the quality of a film

(Anonymous) 2015-09-16 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
So last weekend I saw The Visit, and I was at YouTube reading comments on movie reviewers who reviewed the film. A lot of people said they didn't like the film because they said that either they felt the plot was easy to predict or the pkot twist wasn't that good.

It surprised me a lot that so many people based their opinion of the film on the pkot twist. I can say the plot twist of the film wasn't a total shocker but I liked the film a lot. I thought it was a fun and very interesting film. And the set up to the plot twist was well done. I also thought the acting was top notch, and it's a very good film from M. Night Shyamalan, which is a nice surprise since I feel like he hasn't had a good film in awhile.
I actually think a big thing that detracted Shyamalan and audiences' expectations of his films is that everyone got way too caught up in a big interesting plot twist that they lost sight of just simply telling a good story.

So FS, what are your thoughts on plot twists? Do you think a good plot twist needs to be unpredictable? Do you find people use plot twists too much in films? When is a plot twist effective in your mind?

I'm not a fan. First, I don't like surprises so I'm not really the target market for a plot twist. I dislike having my expectations messed with. Some plot twists can be good, but I thoroughly spoil myself before watching anything and if your movie can't hold up with me knowing the plot twist at the end, then it's not a good movie.

Second, I think many films tie themselves into knots to force a plot twist into a movie. They rely on the gimmick of it, instead of just making a good movie. Those movies are never satisfying. The plot twist is often artificial or sensationalistic. The movie is made to service the twist and not the overall story. Often characterization is suddenly sacrificed. I think it's better to tell a straight-up story and ignore plot twists.
