63. Well yes, people did get into the books because of the movies, and that's great. But the secret maker obviously didn't, or she would've known that "LEGOLAS DIES LOL" was bullshit. I have no sympathy for people who fall for fake spoilers for a world-famous 50-year-old story because they're too fucking stupid to even pick up the Cliff's Notes, nevermind the actual book.

Wait, didn't the secret maker state that he/she had gotten through the first two books before the whole "LEGOLAS DIES" thing happened?

I'd be more inclined to believe that if she could spell Tolkien's name properly.

And if so? The fact she got conned was her own damn fault, because she also says she didn't want to research to avoid being "spoiled."

For a story half a century old. That's a whole new level of Special right there.

I won't even go into the lulz that is the "death" of an almost nonexistent character totally ruining a series for someone, which is the real reason I doubt she actually touched the books until the movie marketing started.

You're right about it being her own fault for being spoiled. She could've prevented it by staying out of the fandom until she'd finished the books.

I guess I was being more sympathetic because of the actions of the older fans. What they did was crap, but she shouldn't complain when she wasn't being cautious.

As the OP of 63, I would just like to state that I was not in the fandom in any way at the time. The icons appeared in various community posts on my f-list that were completely unrelated to the Lord of the Rings series. Being as I was merely a casual fan, I wasn't going to go into Harry Potter lock down and shut myself away from all contact to avoid spoilers. I was merely disappointed that people were so nasty as to ruin things for everyone else.

Sorry you felt that you had to fall in with the above posters' visceral hate and assumptions of my person. Obviously, my little secret should be treated with more mocking. Stupid me for being so casual about things. Obviously, I was acting like a stupid cunt. No wonder this is a secret.

She wasn't bitching about the spoilers - they weren't spoilers! She was bitching about the fact that people felt they had to ruin the enjoyment of people who hadn't read the book just to make themselves feel more intelligent.

It doesn't matter if the book is 50 years old or five minutes off the presses, the results are still the same. Some bitches ruined it for OP and now you're running around being an asshole to anyone being reasonable about the whole thing, because you're certainly not.

The point is that people were acting like assholes and were doing what they could to deliberately spoil things for others. This wasn't a case of the OP stumbling upon a random conversation where someone gave away the ending.
