Go on and avoid the issue completely trying to be sassy and cute.

It's ridiculous for people to insist that everyone must read certain books and be a complete douchebag to them if they haven't. So someone didn't discover Dickens when they were five? Obviously we need to flay the skin off of them and put them in the stocks for a week.

Re: 63

Only a week? Clearly you're not a hardcore Dickens fan or you'd insist on a month!

In other words, I agree with your comments.

No one said it had to be that soon but it's like this:

In an earlier comment here, the OP of 63 said she saw those things on LJ, which has an age limit of 13 (like most sites so even if it was off of LJ my point still stands), which in turn means she was at least 13 when the movies came out. At that age she could have read the entire book before even the first movie came out. If she discovered spoilers or fake spoilers it's her own damn fault because for something that is 50 years old it's ridiculous to think that fans are still required to warn for spoilers.

...Can I give you a high five, mousie? You know, for pointing out what all the simps in this thread (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/128391.html?thread=35223431#t35223431) seem to be missing?

Re: 63

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
So again, since the OP didn't read the books at 13, they must be a moron for not reading 50 year old books? This logic...wait, it's not logic, it's just flat out being a asshole, nevermind!

Re: 63

(Anonymous) 2008-02-09 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Er... haven't replied to this thread yet, but I personally read the series right after I watched the first movie, just so I'd get the story the "right way" first. I was no older than 11.

Not to say that that was the one and only right way to do things! I'm just saying that it was logical and viable for a regular preteen to read 50 year old books just to get the right conjecture on the series. ^^ Maybe you can use a better justification for your argument?

Re: 63

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I won't use a better argument as the one's I'm going up against are flat out stupid. It's ridiculous to thrust such expectations on people that everyone should have read the book before the movie came out because the books are 50 years old and nobody can say that something was ruined for them for the same reason. It just doesn't work like that. Just because it can be done one way doesn't mean it should and that everyone must be like these asshats that say it MUST be done this way.

Re: 63

(Anonymous) 2008-02-09 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm... I suppose you have a point. I guess by looking up information on the book when she only intended to watch the movies would've been pretty spoiler-ish. Still, I wonder if the peace of mind would've been worth it...?

83 I suppose bringing up the subject of real!fan and movie!fan is sort of inevitable in this case. I don't see the advantages of watching only the book. 8D It's like more story for the price of one! However, I don't agree with the viewpoint that a movie only fan is any worse than a book fan -- they just don't know that much more about the series. I see nothing wrong with that.

I appreciate the girls' intention from all those years ago -- after all, that must have gotten more people to read the books -- but I wouldn't appreciate the way they went about it. =/ The me right now doesn't appreciate it, anyway. I'm pretty sure that I would've just laughed and moved on when I was little (at the OP). ^^ I don't know if it would've been genuinely funny or just me being a butthole, though.

This is the same crap that the Sweeney Todd fandom must be going through. Le sigh.

Oh, and I'm de-mousing. Hello. *wave*

*watching only the movie.

Wow, full of massive fail.

Re: 63

[identity profile] thano.livejournal.com 2008-02-09 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Or maybe I'm an idiot and forgot to de-mouse. *headdesk* Nonetheless, hello.

Re: 63

(Anonymous) 2008-02-09 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL reading comprehension.

The argument is not that she should've read the books first, but that she shouldn't be so goddamn butthurt that she got "spoiled" for a story that's at least twice as old as she is.

Since the books have been out so long, it's foolish of her to expect others to be concerned about spoiling a story -- whether the spoilers are real or fake is irrelevant -- that was written before she was even conceived. She should be expecting there to be spoilers out there, real and fake, if you haven't read the whole thing.

Please, if this secret was "OMG I SAW AN ICON THAT SAID HAN SOLO DIED IN ROTJ AND IT WASN'T TRUE! THE MEANIES!" you'd be laughing your ass off at them. Why should LOTR be any different?

Also? She said she'd gotten through the first two before the movies came out. There was roughly a full year between the release of each film. That would've been plenty of time to finish the third one.

Re: 63

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, excuse me. I didn't know that people weren't allowed to have feelings attached to things they read. That stupid cunt should have known better than to get upset over a book that was written before she was born.

Re: 63

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
LOL@going off topic because you've clearly lost.

Re: 63

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Dude...we're arguing on the fucking internet. I don't see anyone getting a gold star around here. But hey, if you can't discern a relevant comment from a white flag, well yeah...

Re: 63

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh I can. Apparently you can't, or you would've responded with something that indicated you actually, yanno, read the previous comment.

Besides, arguing on the internet's fun. People get butthurt over the dumbest things, and it's hilarious.
