Question for Fanartists

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-09-18 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you feel about fics inspired by your art? What if the writer isn't amazing?

There are these two pieces of fanart that are making me want to write fics inspired by them. But I'm not sure how the artists would feel, especially because my writing quality can't come close to matching the quality of the art.

Depends on the artist really.

I don't care for fic so I probably wouldn't read it, but I'd at least appreciate the gesture. Some artists consider their art personal so (even it's of copyrighted characters and share publically lmao) they don't want derivative works of it.

Just ask, I'm sure most artists would love to see their art inspire others.

Speaking as a fan artist, I'd be flattered, sure, but it's not something I'd be comfortable with since I usually have a "story" in mind when I come up with my fan art in particular. Reason why I say this is that art is pretty much the only way I can really convey those stories (I tried doing actual writing, it didn't work out) and it feels awkward when someone has a completely different interpretation from what I had in mind.

I know, I'm a colossal dick for even thinking that, but luckily no one's been inspired by my work enough to write fan fic ever, so I haven't had to mention that out loud or deal with any potential awkwardness in saying 'thank you, but I'd rather you didn't, please'.

I'm tickled pink and delighted, regardless of the writer's skill.

Like, there are really shitty fanartists out there, but I doubt the creators of the media they're fanarting of are upset that they're getting fanart of non-professional skill.

It shows someone enjoyed and appreciated your work, i reckon that's pretty cool.

and vice versa for fanwriters getting fanart

Not a fanartist but...

I have the artistic ability of a drunk capybara, but if someone were to draw a scene from one of my fics then I would be very, very flattered and would likely love them forever. I imagine the reverse situation is true for most people.

If someone doesn't respond to 'hey, I liked your thing and it inspired me to create my own thing and I want to share it with you,' with joy and smiles then the problem lies with them.

I'm not the greatest writer or artist, so take this with a grain of salt. I would be flattered to have someone make art for a story of mine, but I generally wouldn't be as thrilled with someone writing a story for my art. As the other anon said, generally I have an idea in my head for what is happening at the moment in time of my art, as taken as part of a story in my mind, and seeing a different story would be a bit weird.

If anyone ever writes fanfic based on something I created I feel super happy and flattered, no matter how long it is, how experienced the writer is, I just love it.

Personally, I would die of happiness if anyone did that. So far I've only received art inspired by my art, which is great, too, but different.

If the quality of the writing were outright cringeworthy, I'd probably laugh&still be chuffed that someone took the time and the effort to write a piece inspired by my work.

So it's a win/win situation.

If you're not certain, ask the fanartist? Most of them, to my experience, are fine answering queries regarding "inspired by" works. And if you've got a response straight from the source, you'll feel more comfortable with ficcing away, I'd think.
