I read this old Thundercats fic once; it was about the Thunder Twins mostly and it presented like Wilykit was this murderer and incestuous with her brother. But in fact it was all just in Wilykat's mind.

Oh god. Can we count the thunder cats comic? The thunder twins becoming sexslaves to mum ra was not something I saw coming, aged up via timeskip or no.

No joke, go look!

The Sixth Sense is still pretty awesome on rewatches. I loved the ending of The Prestige.

What I found the most fun with the Sixth Sense was going back and rewatching it and looking for all of the little clues once you knew what the twist was. Just those little "OHHHH" moments and things that you didn't even notice the first time you watched it.

The ending of C.N. Adichie's "Purple Hibiscus", where it turns out that the outwardly very obedient wife - the mother of the main heroine, a severely abused child - is the one who's been poisoning the head of the family all along.

The ending of Agatha Christie's "Orient Express". I'm still impressed!

Re: Best twist endings? SPOILERS obviously

Murder on the Orient Express was the very first mystery I read, and somehow that took out the shock of the twist for me. I was still surprised, but I didn't grasp how genre-defying it was.

For my money (/by the time I could appreciate it) her best twist is the end of Murder Of Roger Ackroyd. I've reread it a few times, and every time I do I pick up on a new, totally obvious clue.

By a weird coincidence, Murder of Roger Ackroyd was MY first mystery. I remember being absolutely flabbergasted at the ending. But even at the time, it struck me as a uniquely smart twist. High five! I should really reread it, too, if only so that I could look for all the clues.

Agatha Christie has a lot of great twist endings. Hers are especially great because most of the time if you go back the clues are there.

The Sixth Sense wins everything. Don't know how people can say the movie is lesser once you already know the twist.

What if you figured out the "twist" 15 minutes in?

What then???

You too, huh?

[personal profile] philippos42 2015-09-19 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I was sort of half-spoiled, so I figured it out--or at least figured out it was a possibility--really fast.

It's fun watching a movie like that and checking to be sure everything fits two different interpretations. Night did a good job.

I figured it out about halfway through, which surprised the hell out of my best friend (he'd seen it before, I hadn't)

There are a lot of them, but I absolutely loved the twist in the original BioShock ("Would you kindly") and though I should've expected it by that point, BioShock Infinite also totally dumbfounded me.

Then there's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I wouldn't necessarily say it was a twist 'ending' since the true twist comes a bit before the end, but it was still one of my favorite "WHOA, whaaaaaaaaat?!" moments in gaming.

And I'm going to include Dragon Age: Inquisition though I knew something similar was up from early on. Still, by the time the game had ended I had convinced myself I was wrong, and so when the twist actually happened I was shocked.

+1 to BioShock. There's a reason it was so many people's GOTY that year.

"The Twilight Zone" had some great ones. Episodes like "Time Enough at Last", "To Serve Man", "Eye of the Beholder", "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?" are a few notable examples.

The Usual Suspects is maybe not the best but it's the one that always comes to mind. It's so well-executed and it's so good going back to watch the rest of the movie again.
