But I wasn't angry at the racism, just surprised. And I'm genuinely curious if they knew what they were doing when they put those words about grave desecrations into the antagonist's mouth.

And I would totally, seriously watch a film along the lines of The Mummy where it's Christianity instead of ancient Egyptian religions.

But Christian beliefs and burial rites have never included embalming. So how does that even work?

Well, again. Angels, maybe? Graveyard statues? That's kind of Doctor Who X) Evil icons that make people murder each other, like the skull in The Skull? Evil crosses, perhaps! Evil wooden Jesus coming down from his cross every night and going around strangling random folk.

So basically... nothing like the Mummy. Because Ancient Egyptian religious practices are nothing like Christian practices - ancient or modern. Right. I can totally see your point.

Worry not, films like The Mummy do not aspire to be historically accurate. All the Egyptian dude does in this is lots of reading out loud with a very dramatic face. That could easily be matched to a Christian practice.

Seriously, the point of Hammer horror stuff is ANYTHING but historical or cultural accuracy. It's the aesthetic that matters. And Christianity has plenty of aesthetics that could be turned into a cheesy Hammer narrative?

When I said "along the lines of The Mummy", I didn't mean "literally like The Mummy in every way, only Christian". Just "a horror film based on distorted religious aesthetics and stereotypes about religion".

But like all tropes, these stories have roots in a shallow approximation of the truth.

this is literally the whole point of Hammer horror...

Are we arguing the same point here? I'm too tired to tell.

I think the problem here is that you thought I was proposing a serious, 100% unironical horror film about Christianity, while I was, in fact, toying with the idea of a deliberately cheesy and horribly inaccurate piece of Hammer horror-style nonsense.
