I don't think those who pass sweeping judgements on all "problematic" older fiction understand how history works or what the implications of their views are. They deny the existence of kindness, care, acceptance, and ultimately, basic humanity because they can't stomach the idea of good people in imperfect societies - or, for that matter, good but flawed people.

Yeah exactly. It's actually a rhetoric that is scary to me in its own right. To deny that people can be mistaken, misled, and instead can only be either good or evil is terrifying. It's the atmosphere of the Salem witchhunts, or of Nazi Germany. You're either with us or against us - and if you're against us then you're subhuman and you deserve everything you get. That's the thinking that seems to happen on every side of every argument these days. It's not healthy.
