Surrendering under conditions they couldn't agree to is something America would never have done, if they'd ever been invaded. To expect another country to do it is ludicrous. We demanded something that we *knew* they couldn't agree to. Made the decision much easier, i'm sure.

Clearly the COULD agree to it since they DID.

Or are you forgetting that America DID occupy Japan?

Once they were bombed, yes, once they'd had such huge losses, yes. But we could have had a peaceful end if we hadn't demanded the one thing we knew they would never accept without something extremely dire happening.

"such huge losses"

It was LESS than the firebombing of Tokyo.

And clearly they COULD accept it.

You keep saying we demanded the one thing we knew they would never accept -- but they DID so clearly that is WRONG.

And the loss of life wasn't what persuaded the Japanese since, as I've pointed out, conventional firebombing killed MORE people than the atomic bombs.

But the bombs made them realize that they COULDN'T win -- that it was impossible and hopeless.

If the deaths had persuaded them, they would have surrendered after the first bomb was dropped or after the firebombing of Tokyo.

It was when America dropped the second that they surrendered (and with the entry of the USSR) because they finally realized they COULDN'T win.

They *already* knew they couldn't win, though, is the whole point. They knew it, they were trying to negotiate a surrender they could swallow. We didn't give them the chance. Japan wasn't going to pack up and hit Hawaii - or any other US target - again. They didn't have the resources. They barely had the resources to keep fighting on the mainland. *We* could have done better, and we didn't.

Germany was also "trying" to negotiate a surrender during WWI. Guess what? They couldn't agree and so lots more people died. Not just Germans but plenty of French and British and American and troops from the colonies as well.

If Japan KNEW that they couldn't win, then they should have surrendered. But I do think it took the bomb to make them realize that it was entirely hopeless.

Why?

Because otherwise they would have surrendered earlier.

Wait a minute, are you really implying that diplomacy and negotiations weren't an option at all? That dropping TWO bombs was really necessary and that Japan deserved it for not surrendering unconditionally?

Holly shit, non, I haven't been so creeped out by a comment here in awhile.

Random capslock doesn't make you sound more intelligent, it just makes you look like a crazy conspiracy theorist on ice

If you're actually going to address the substance of my posts please do so. Otherwise, I'm not really interested in hearing how "crazy" I appear to you.

If you want to talk about how we appear to one another, I'll just say that your attacks on how I write rather than the content of my posts give me the impression that you have no arguments against the points I made and are thus attacking trivialities in the hope that you can somehow discredit me. Because I used CAPSLOCK. DA HORROR
